Just for the record, Mitt Romney is back on the auto bailout AGAIN this week – this time it’s Chrysler and their supposed plans to shutdown their Toledo plant and move the production to the People Republic of China.
Just one of the debunkers was Rachel Maddow last night (VIDEO).

Regarding “Jeeps in China,” Romney is pointing to a Bloomberg News piece from last week in which a Fiat-Chrysler official confirmed that the company is considering building Jeeps in China. But the same official said what is being considered is adding production in China — not shutting down American Jeep factories such as the one in Toledo. Chrysler is investing $500 million in its Toledo Jeep Complex and more than 1,000 new jobs were promised there.
On Thursday night in Defiance, near Toledo, Romney said he read that Fiat is “thinking of moving all (Jeep) production to China.” Hours before Romney took the stage in Defiance, a Chrysler official said on the company’s website: “Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China,” and “a careful and unbiased reading of the Bloomberg take would have” prevented such an assertion.

And the Columbus Dispatch has been running with headlines like: “Jeep/Romney question lingers.” The Dispatch extensively fact-checked Romney’s claims about the auto-bailout, clearly demonstrating that he did in fact oppose the rescue of the industry Obama ended up pursuing.
This is hardly a comprehensive look at the local coverage, but it does suggest the possibility that Romney’s Jeep-to-China gamble may be backfiring. Polls have shown that large numbers of Ohioans don’t think Romney cares about their needs and problems. And the Obama campaign views the auto bailout, and Romney’s dishonesty about it, as central to their closing case against Romney’s character, integrity, and true priorities. So these are exactly the headlines the Obama team wants.
In this morning’s Toledo Blade, Bill Clinton takes a shot:
Mr. Clinton told a crowd at Youngstown State University that the claim was “the biggest load of bull in the world,” pointing to a Chrysler Group LLC statement that said the firm was considering ramping up production in China, but not at the expense of its North American operations.
